Welcome to The Made Collaborative Virtual Studio!
What
Made Collaborative is an immersive virtual studio experience. Our virtual Studio Cards are designed to facilitate collaboration with you by providing you with context on topics, concepts, characters and some of the people behind or Creative Commons comic project called the Back of the Yards.
Why
The Made Collaborative Studio was developed by Jimmy Briseno and Len Kody. Len and Jimmy began developing this virtual platform in 2020 when COVID emerged as a way of extending their original in-person classroom comic collaborations in the west side of Chicago to the virtual realm.
Who
In addition to Len and Jimmy, other project collaborators include John Golden, Eric Nyamor, Dan Dougherty and Manny Dominguez.
Welcome to the Made Collaborative
Virtual Studio Platform!
As we have covered in various other parts of this Website, this project started at as a modest grass roots after school supplemental program designed to connect participating urban youth with professional artists. And from those very modest origins, the project would evolve into a comic-based collaborative project, further spawning creation of our new comic series, The Back of the Yards!
With this Virtual Studio platform, we hope to support and expand collaborations on the Back of the Yards comic series—bringing together participating youth, after-school programs, and you.
The core digital feature of this platform is our collection of virtual Studio Cards. You can explore them anywhere on this site by hovering your cursor over any Studio Card and clicking “Read More.”
Below, you’ll also find an overview of the Collaborators’ Handbook. If you’re viewing from a laptop or desktop, you can expand the Flipbook to full screen by clicking the expand icon in the lower-right corner of the Flipbook viewer.
You can also download and print the handbook by selecting the download icon located on the bottom-right tab of the Flipbook.
Current Featured Collaborations
To help facilitate your exploration of this Studio Page, we present you some currently featured collaborations below. And you can access any of these collaborations simply by hovering your cursor over each Studio Card presented below and clicking “Read More” on the back side of the Card.
Let's Create Your Own Character(s)!
With this first Featured Collaboration, we will help you to create new comic characters either for your own independent projects, or if you’d like, you can submit those characters to us for the potential of being selected for further development with us, and even possible inclusion in our next Back of the Yards comic series!
We will do this by providing you with a digital template in the form of Studio Card #1 that walks you through a basic character development process, starting with the developing some basic characteristics development, and then building to more in depth core value and character archetype development for your new character.
All Stories Start With
A Great Character!
And Now Let's Now Create Your Own Hero's Journey!
With this featured collaboration, we’re continuing to develop the “Ordinary World” of our Back of the Yards fictional comic neighborhood (Phase 1 of the Hero’s Journey)—and you’re invited to be part of that creative process.
As described in Studio Card #3: Introduction to the Back of the Yards Comic Series, our fictional “Back of the Yards” is inspired by the real historic neighborhood in Chicago, Illinois.
Through this collaboration, you can help us further build and enrich our fictional neighborhood by submitting places from your own community. These might be stores, churches, parks, restaurants—any place that matters to you. The key to your contribution is context: when you make a submission, tell us why this place is important to you. In this collaborative project, your stories and perspectives are what bring the world to life.

Creating Two New Comic Characters and Related Dialogue
As described earlier, we have long planned to explore themes of law enforcement and community relations within our Back of the Yards comic series. From a storytelling perspective, it would be impossible to continue a narrative set in a fictional South Side Chicago neighborhood without meaningfully incorporating law enforcement into the world.
Through this featured collaboration, we will work with you to co-create two new characters—both police officers—who will make their first appearance in Issue #3. Some of the dialogue shared above may also be adapted into a comic scene featuring these characters.
In addition, we will facilitate an ongoing dialogue between participating youth and current or retired police officers. Highlights from these conversations will appear in the supplemental section of Issue #3 of the Back of the Yards series.

Help Us Develop Issue 3 of the Back of the Yards Comic!
Having walked you through the first two featured collaborations to help set the collaborative stage by introducing you to some basic concepts and tools for character and Hero’s Journey development, we then bring you to Studio Card #3 – our Back of the Yards comic series! It is here that we will try to build upon some of those basic creative tools by inviting you to collaborate with us on our comic production.
And more specifically, with your collaboration, we will:
1. Bring Issue 2 (already fully illustrated) to final production, and
2. Present you with a working manuscript for Issue #3 of the comic series to develop into a final script for production and illustration development.
We may also update Issue 1 with a few more minor punch list updates, but that will be subject to further artist review.
