Welcome to The Made Collaborative Virtual Studio!

Introducing Made Collaborative Studio!

What

Made Collaborative is an immersive virtual studio experience. Our virtual Studio Cards are designed to facilitate collaboration with you by providing you with context on topics, concepts, characters and some of the people behind or Creative Commons comic project called the Back of the Yards.

Why

The Made Collaborative Studio was developed by Jimmy Briseno and Len Kody.  Len and Jimmy began developing this virtual platform in 2020 when COVID emerged as a way of extending their original in-person classroom comic collaborations in the west side of Chicago to the virtual realm.

Who

In addition to Len and Jimmy, other project collaborators include John Golden, Eric Nyamor, Dan Dougherty and Manny Dominguez.

This Week's Featured Collaboration:

Let's Build a Neighborhood

Every neighborhood has places that become part of its story.

The corner store everyone stopped at after school. The basketball court that belonged to the older kids after dark.  A restaurant where everyone seemed to know each other. A front porch.  A church.  A vacant lot.  A barbershop.  An alley that served as a shortcut home.

Most of these places will never appear in a history book.  But ask someone who grew up there, and they’ll remember.

That place.  That person.  That thing that happened there.  Those are the details that make a neighborhood feel real.

And as we continue building the fictional neighborhood of our collaborative Back of the Yards comic series, we want some of your memories to help shape the Ordinary World of our story.

So we’re beginning our Issue #3 collaborative workshop series with one simple question:  What’s one place from your own neighborhood that you still remember?

And some of the places submitted through the Workshop belpw will become part of our fictional Back of the Yards.

We will start with at least three collaborator-inspired locations that will appear in scenes from Issue #3, with more included in future issues.  And if your contribution helps inspire a location that appears in Issue #3, you’ll be credited as part of its development.

Welcome to the Issue #3 Collaborations! This anchor Studio Card introduces Back of the Yards, a Creative Commons comic series developed by the Made Collaborative Studio. Set on Chicago's West Side, the story follows a young man whose seemingly supernatural encounter leads him on a journey to discover what is real, what lies beneath the surface of his neighborhood, and how the lives of those around him are connected. With this Studio Card, we invite you to explore the world of Back of the Yards and help shape Issue #3 through a series of creative collaborations.
When
Our story moves between past and present, exploring how events, relationships and decisions from earlier generations continue to shape the lives of characters today. As we develop Issue #3, we'll uncover more of the neighborhood's history and the mysteries connecting its past to its present.
Who
Meet the students, neighborhood Elders, families, law enforcement officers and other personalities who inhabit Back of the Yards. From Andre Davis and Tamia Parker to characters whose stories have yet to be fully revealed, each brings a different perspective to the neighborhood and its unfolding mysteries.
Why
Every neighborhood has stories worth tellin g— and every person has something to contribute. Through our Studio Cards and creative Workshops, we're inviting collaborators to help develop the characters, places, artwork and story possibilities that may shape Issue #3 and the future of Back of the Yards.

Our Back of the Yards begins with a real place.

Back of the Yards is a real Chicago neighborhood — with its own history, culture, institutions and generations of people who have called it home.

Our comic doesn’t attempt to recreate that neighborhood exactly.

Instead, the fictional Back of the Yards draws inspiration from the character of the real community while creating a world of its own—one shaped by our original youth collaborators, our artists and writers, and now, by people entering the Studio.

Want to explore the comic before entering the Workshop?  Start with the Back of the Yards Studio Card to the right.

There you can read the comics, explore the current Issue #3 Working Manuscript, and get a better feel for the world we’re building through the Issue 3 Dossier.

_______________________________________________

OUR NEIGHBORHOOD IS STILL BEING BUILT.

Across Issues #1 and #2, parts of the fictional Back of the Yards have already begun to take shape.  We know some of its streets. Its schools. Its homes. The places where our characters gather. And the places where some of the story’s stranger moments have begun to unfold.

But as Issue #3 develops, our characters will move through new parts of the neighborhood.

Some of those places haven’t been created yet.

That’s intentional.

We want this world to continue growing the same way it began: through collaboration.

Enter the Workshop

Let's Collaborate

Now think about your neighborhood growing up.

Not the whole neighborhood.  Just One place.  Maybe everyone knew it. Maybe only a few people did.

Maybe something important happened there. Maybe nothing important ever happened there.

But for some reason, you remember it.

What did it look like?  Who was usually there?  What happened there?

Why has it stayed with you?

Hold onto that place.  Now it is time to put it on our map!

No drawing skills required. Just bring your imagination.

Early in Issue #3, Dex Coleman encounters a young man he doesn't recognize. We know this character will matter to the developing story. What we haven't fully decided is exactly who he is.

Selected ideas and artwork may be featured through Made Collaborative and considered as we develop the character who ultimately appears in Issue #3. Contributors whose ideas are incorporated into the finished comic will be credited as part of its development.

Brief
For Issue #3, we're returning to our Create a Character framework - but this time, we're opening the halls of New City High and inviting you to help us populate them. From students and teachers to administrators, friends, rivals and unexpected personalities, we'll use the same creative process introduced earlier in the Studio to build the community surrounding Andre and Tamia. At least two of the characters created through this collaboration will appear in Issue #3 - with the possibility that others may return in stories still to come.
Background
New City High is filled with students, teachers and personalities whose stories are still waiting to be told. As we develop Issue #3 of Back of the Yards, we're inviting collaborators to create original characters who might walk its halls, form new relationships and help bring the school community to life.
This & That
Selected ideas and artwork may be featured through Made Collaborative and considered as we develop new characters that may ultimately appear in Issue #3 or future issues. Contributors whose ideas are incorporated into these new characters will be credited as part of its development.

Brief
For our second Issue #3 collaboration centered on Andre Davis, we're opening the pages of his notebook - and inviting young creators, artists, and storytellers to help fill them. Earlier, we explored Andre's emerging abilities and what becoming extraordinary might mean for him. This time, we're turning to his creative side: What might Andre draw, sketch, write, or imagine when no one else is looking? Selected contributions may ultimately appear inside Andre's notebook in the finished comic, giving collaborators an opportunity to leave their creative mark on Issue #3 of Back of the Yards.

Dex has lived through decades of neighborhood history, including his connections to Darius King and Chicago's criminal underworld. The Monahans!
Andre’s Favorite Comic!

11 | Issue #3 Collaborations

QR Code for 11 | Issue #3 Collaborations
Brief
The Monahans began as a mock comic book cover commission, but now they're finding a place within the world of Back of the Yards. In Issue #3, readers may catch a glimpse of their comic tucked inside Andre Davis's backpack - a small detail that could open the door to a much larger story. For this collaboration, we're inviting writers, artists, and other creative minds to help imagine that story. Using the Hero's Journey as a creative starting point, we'll explore who the Monahans might be, what adventures await them, and how their fictional world might take shape. Whether through storytelling, original artwork, or simply describing an idea, collaborators can help develop a fictional universe that may someday extend beyond this brief appearance.
When
The Monahans will be introduced through Andre's storyline in Issue #3, with opportunities to develop its fictional history and world through our ongoing Studio collaborations.
Who
The characters, personalities, and world of the Monahans are still largely unexplored. That's where participating writers, artists, and other creative collaborators come in.
Why
To create a backstory for the Monahans and imagine the places where their adventures might unfold. Artists can contribute original background illustrations, while non-artists can describe settings in words. Selected ideas may help shape the comic's fictional world and potentially inspire future stories.
