Studio Card #1: The Made Collaborative Virtual Studio!
What
Made Collaborative is an immersive virtual studio experience. Our virtual Studio Cards are designed to facilitate collaboration with you by providing you with context on topics, concepts, characters and some of the people behind or Creative Commons comic project called the Back of the Yards.
Why
The Made Collaborative Studio was developed by Jimmy Briseno and Len Kody. Len and Jimmy began developing this virtual platform in 2020 when COVID emerged as a way of extending their original in-person classroom comic collaborations in the west side of Chicago to the virtual realm.
Who
In addition to Len and Jimmy, other project collaborators include John Golden, Eric Nyamor, Dan Dougherty and Manny Dominguez.
Welcome to the Made Collaborative Virtual Studio Platform!
Welcome one and all!. We have created this virtual platform to enable comic story collaborations between you and participating youth from after-school programs and other academic organizations. And by doing so, we are hoping to provide all participants a fun collaborative environment and with that, develop some cool comic stories and characters along the way together, including our ongoing Back of the Yards comic series!
Now, before we get into some of the “what” and “how” of this virtual platform, we thought we’d first quickly tackle the “why”? As in why did we try to develop this thing in the first place? And the short answer to that is because we fundamentally believe the creativity is one of the most powerful skills anyone can have. Whether you may be an artist, athlete, scientist, businessperson, student, teacher, etc. – creativity can come in so many different forms to shape our lives …
A Quick Overview of This Virtual Studio Platform
So, in short, with this virtual platform, we are trying to cultivate creativity. Moving on to the “what” and “how.” For those questions we have created short Google Slide presentation below. But, to the extent you just need something to sum up this platform, we leave with one simple phrase to sum it up …

Bringing Your Creative Ideas to Life!
At the end of the day, the basic idea behind this virtual studio is to replicate virtually what we did originally in classrooms in the West of Chicago.
In those early classroom sessions, we workshopped with participating youth to flush out character ideas and storylines, creating working manuscripts, thumbnails sketches, and concept illustrations. All of which would, through the collaborative work of the participating artists and writers, eventually blossom into a fully formed comic – The Back of the Yards.
So it is that we hope to use the virtual Studio Cards below, along with virtual Zoom workshops sessions and other tools, to collaborate with after-school programs and you in much the same way.
Table of Contents
Each virtual card below represents both a quick learning tool relating to this project, and a corresponding collaborative opportunity. And from your input to these cards, we will work to further bring some of your ideas to life, and ultimately incorporate some of your ideas, characters or storylines into our ongoing Creative Commons comic projects, including the Back of the Yards comic series.
That’s the Made Collaborative Studio in a nutshell. And with that, if you’d like to participate, just scroll on down …
